Gentlemen,
Newly appointed and currently undertaking training at the VMI. I have found the staff, especially my long suffering tutor, and brother Cadets most welcoming, supportive and accommodating. Whilst rambling the lake shore the other evening after tutorials it occurred to me there might be other folk here wearing a shamrock sprig in their kepi or who hailed from the "auld sod" If so, step forward and of an evening perhaps we will regale each other of the happenings back in the old country over a bottle of the "hard stuff". Sshhhhh tho and keep it under wraps.....what the staff don't know, won't bother them ! Slainte, a chara

The Irish are a spunky group. About 7 million Irish reside on the isle while 700 million around the world claim to be of Irish descent. Your/our ancestors were either busy or there are a whole bunch of people out there who just wish that they were Irish.

Thank you General for those insightful words. I honestly don't know which it might be, but given there's only 5.5 million of us here today, I have to assume that far away climes better suit the Celtic propensity to increase n multiply lol lol

Sorry to break it to you Ned, but there are only three types of people in the world - The Scots, those that want to be Scots and those with no ambition.

It appears there are quite a few "Wild Geese" in both ranks here. Not too surprising since, as the poet said: "The Irish are a strange race, the race that God made mad, for all their wars are merry ones and all their songs are sad!"

Up the Republic!

My family is part of the Irish diaspora. I know one of my ancestors fought for the Union and picked up an 1862 Tower rifle from a confederate soldier that I currently have in my possession. I know other parts of my family fought for the CSA but do not know if they were Irish.
