"The man installed to oversee the training of the 82nd Division at Camp Gordon was Gen. Eben Swift, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and the Pancho Villa Expedition and a former director of the Army War College.

Swift wanted to give the Germans a special surprise when the U.S. Army arrived and began fighting in the trenches. He wanted to teach the 82nd Division the "Rebel Yell," a battle cry used by Confederate soldiers as they charged Union lines during the Civil War."

Very interesting.

But did they ever use the Rebel Yell in battle? It appears not as the article says the "[Rebel Yell] died out with the last of the Confederacy’s remaining veterans."

“Rebel Yell” of sorts has been used through the ages. Any scream or intense sound (i.e. bagpipes or drums) in conjunction with others to intimidate or pray upon an enemies morale is nothing new. “There isnt anything new under the sun”.

In fact, we even coach our kids here when becoming “set” on the line of scrimmage (football) to grunt in unison. Intimidating? Maybe.

The Rebel Yell 'en masse' has an eerie sound not unlike a raucous pack of wild dogs. I would think that hearing that sound from hundreds of men running at you with fury in their eyes would be quite intimidating, if not outright scary.

The best recording of it I've heard is this one (https://youtu.be/7mGAesLYlF8?t=160 - it should start at 2:40). It was made using a recorded yell that was then patterned to replicate the sound of one company making it - an entire regiment or brigade yelling it must have something to behold.
