In a game I was playing I built breastworks in one sector of the battlefield. My units left that area and went off to do something else. The move after all my men left that area (the nearest unit would have been seven hexes from where the closest breastworks had been) the breastworks had gone.
They certainly couldn't have fallen apart in twenty minutes [my men would have done a better job than that would indicate]. The local populace must have been very efficient in dismantling and removing them as they took a fair bit longer than twenty minutes to construct them.

Clearly breastworks do not 'deconstruct' with the same probability as construction (generally a base chance of around 20%) so what happened? Do they 'get removed' once there are no more units within a certain distance [what distance?] or is there some other parameter that is considered?

The breastworks could be outside of your line of sight and are thus not visible.

Correct. Any other explanation would be glitch related.

Yes, you're both correct. Silly me. I sent some cavalry to check and all diggings remain.
