A new campaign by the ABT focusing on a proposed development right next to the First Day's battlefield at Gettysburg. Anyone who has stopped at the waystation right across from the Reynolds & Buford statues on the Chambersburg Pike, this is right behind the woods and is literally next to Willoughby Run. It most certainly would be right on the ground that regiments from Pettigrew, Archer and other brigades went through. It would also create a visual obstruction in an area that doesn't have one right now and would be right in your face, as well as any sunset photos you'd take too. It's currently the closest proposed development to the battlefield in recent years.

Below are Google map images of where the location is, with the yellow arrow marking the general area of the proposed apartments:

Willoughby Run in the winter is easy to get to from the nearby Meredith Ave park road. I've walked down to it and can easily be crossed in the winter. Rather overgrown in the summer, but either way the apartments would be right there and very visible in the winter. I'll try to find some images in my collection of photos.

Ugh. Always something going on at Gettysburg.

Makes me happy that places like Perryville and Shiloh are so far off the main roads that they are "HOPEFULLY" beyond any sort of mass development.

About the only new buildings at Perryville are the local farmers putting up birdhouses.

Thanks, Scott. A worthy cause.

It's been a while since I even looked into how this campaign was going, but I happened to check out the mail from them today. The Battlefield Trust is still short money to stave off this threat.

I don't have time to scan the whole mailing, but the link to the Trust's site is here: https://www.battlefields.org/give/save- ... ughbys-run

I was able to scan the map they included with it, that is not on the site. It shows the overlay of where the apartments would go:

The below images are ones I took from the battlefield in past years, showing that this would forever change the First Day's landscape and would be visible from all points of view.

Reynolds Statue & McPherson Ridge..They'd be on the left hand side.

Straight on in this image of the famous McPherson Barn.

Even from the Eternal Flame on Oak Hill, it's easy to see and obstruct the view, being about where the sun rays touch the woods in the photo.

With the amount of old trees falling in the woods around Willoughby Run, these apartments would become even more visible.

With the loss of preservation that has occurred in Northern Virginia lately, this would be a sad one to add to the pile.

Just donated. Thanks for the update, Scott!

Hopefully this deal doesn't go through. But with so many threats these days to the battlefields anything is possible. Every time you turn around it is something.

Thanks Blake and indeed it is, but this one seems more in reach than others at the moment.
