The Confederate Cabinet

1. Three of the original cabinet members were foreign born. Who were they and in what countries were they born?

2. One of the original cabinet members left the cabinet for a general's star and performed outstandingly at Antietam. Name him.

3. One cabinet officer held three different portfolios. Name him and the positions.

4. One cabinet member was captured with the fleeing Jefferson Davis in 1865 and held for a time at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. Who was he?

5. One cabinet member was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Name him and the office he held.

6. Name the former U.S. senator from Virginia who served Davis as secretary of state.

7. Name the cabinet member who had been vice president of the United States.

8. Name the three cabinet members who served throughout the war.

9. Which cabinet office had the most occupants? How many?

1) Foreign Born Cabinet Members?

Judah Benjamin - born in St. Croix before immigrating to South Carolina.

Stephen Mallory - born in Trinidad and then moved to Florida in 1820.

Christopher Memminger - born in present-day Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany. Family came to America when he was an infant.

2) Robert Toombs (Correct)

3) Judah Benjamin held three different Cabinet posts: attorney general, secretary of state, and secretary of war.

4) John Reagan (Correct)

5) George Wyeth Randolph was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and became the secretary of war briefly.

6) Former US Senator Robert Hunter became the first secretary of war.

7) John Breckinridge (if you missed this one...)

8 ) The cabinet members who served throughout the war were Judah Benjmain, Stephen Mallory, and John Reagan.

9) The secretary of war post was the most altered and changed hands six times during the war (Leroy Pope Walker, Judah Benjamin, George Randolph, Gustavus Smith, James Seddon, John Breckinridge).
