I can think of a few "odd couples" in the Civil War - Jeb Stuart and Stonewall Jackson immediately spring to mind. But also lesser known ones like Cleburne and Cheatham.

They say opposites attract. Anyone else have any to throw out there?

I reckon Jackson and Ewell would have been quite the pair - both clearly very eccentric, but then with Jackson's piety equally matched by Ewell's profanity (at least up until Ewell's wounding at Brawner's Farm).

If the criteria be "high strung" and "low energy", Bragg and Polk would certainly qualify.

I beg your pardon Sir, and take a most personal offense with your remarks. I'm currently closely associated with both eminent Generals on the field  Choose your weapon Sir, honor must be
upheld !

I think being a fly on the wall for a conversation between Sherman and Forrest would have been most interesting.

But Halleck and Sherman had a cozy friendship for many years. Not a likely duo.
