A Union overreach resulting in the battle of Olustee followed by a broken down train carrying over 1,000 Union wounded that was saved by a Union regiment in miraculous style.

Very cool Ned! Thanks for sharing.

The Lady & I were in the vicinity of Olustee earlier this month and stopped by the battlefield on the way to Jacksonville. It's small, as one would imagine, but some neat things at it. Below are the photos.

Good article, Ned. I noted this statement though: "At the end of the fighting, the rebels would suffer 19% casualties, compared to the Union's staggering 34%. The Union also lost six guns, and the Confederates captured dozens of its horses. It would be the second-bloodiest battle of the war for the Union. Most importantly, the Union was forced to retreat."

Ok - I get the idea that it was a bloody battle but the "second-bloodiest battle of the war?" In terms of percentage of loss? The Union only have a tad under 6,000 men to start the battle. There were many other battles where more than the entire Union strength at Olustee was lost to casualties.

Did I miss something?

The "second-bloodiest battle of the war" must be talking about percentages.

The only one I know that beats it is The Battle of Ball's Bluff. A personal favourite, where a US Senator was also among the casualties, and Union casualties reached a staggering 58% (1,002 out of 1720) plus three cannons and masses of other equipment. Confederate losses were about 9% (155 out of 1,709).

Well done, Brigadier-General Evans (promoted to that rank effective from the day of The Battle of Ball's Bluff).
