What determines how and how far a unit moves after it routs ?

Does it help to have units behind the front line in order to decrease the distance a unit routs?

I am working on ways to deploy a brigade to limit routing

I don't see a specific hex # in the User Manual. Some factors will alter a retreat. With that said, I would say on average 4 hexes.

A number of things but mainly: terrain; presence of enemy units; and presence/number of friendly units.

That will not help decrease the distance a unit routs unless 'the number of men in a hex plus the number of routing men' exceeds the hex limit.
For example, if the hex limit is 1,000 men and a unit of 400 men is routing the routed unit will happily rout through any hex containing 600 or less men. Friendly units that it routs through will then be Disrupted.

There are ways to limit it (I'll send you a pm) but sometimes there's not much you can do about it.
