Gentlemen,

I am sad to announce the passing of longtime ACWGC Member, Clinton Matthews. He passed away on December 27, 2025. I knew something was wrong when he failed to muster for the first time in memory. Clinton joined the Club in 2011 and compiled a very commendable record of 79 victories against just 11 losses and 31 draws. But more importantly, he was a steady volunteer and leader in the Army of Georgia and later the Army of Northern Virginia. He served nearly his entire time in the ACWGC as a divisional commander and was one of the friendliest and most welcoming guys you could meet.

Back in 2013, I interviewed Clint for a monthly newsletter I used to do for the Club. I pasted the interview down below.

Here is the link to his obituary which Scott Ludwig will also add to our Memorial Page. https://www.farleyfh.com/obituaries/clinton-matthews

Well played, well liked, and a competitor that will be missed. Salute to the man whose passing answers the final muster call.

Respectfully Submitted,

Gentlemen, Sirs! <salute>

A few more club items of interest on Clint!

He joined the Club on August 14th, 2011 as the 1259 CSA member at time.

I conducted his training and he was my 40th trained cadet!

There were 30 new CSA members that year in the VMI Class of 2011, 3 members didn't complete their training.

Currently there are 2 Classmates left from the VMI Class of 2011, General Robert Busey #1241 and Brigadier General Giovanni Boffi #1247!

As with all longtime active members he will be missed!

Thanks to Blake for going the extra mile to discover the reason of our missing member!

SALUTE!

Sorry to see the last roll call of this great pastime grow. As a hobby it enhances our knowledge of History and by sparking our interest in seeing the Battlefields
for ourselves, getting out in nature and seeing the Beauty of these places of sacrifice and conflict and a reminder that all of mankind's angst and drama is overcome by the beauty of nature. It is the Main reason I donate funds and volunteer to preserve the story of our past

Pickett's Charge - by Mort Künstler

In Remembrance of Lieutenant General Clint Matthews

Clint was a great guy and a great member of the clubs, especially here! He played a lot of games, and as Blake has noted, Clint never missed a muster. Also well noted was Clint's service in higher commands. Mostly notable as Division Commander in the Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). For the last 12 years, Clint served as Division Commander of Matthews' Division, Krenek's Corps (formerly 2nd (Pickett's) Division, I (Longstreet's) Corps). Prior to the CSA Army Reorganization in 2014 he served in the Army of Georgia (AoG) and was the Army Chief of Staff (CoS) to General Prax Swan. He also served as the Division Commander of the 3rd (Iron Horse) Cavalry Division, III (Rough & Ready) Corps. Clint's entire 15 years of service was spent in the Eastern Theater, which would make sense from Blake's interview with him.

Joining the CCC in 2011 also, Corporal Clint Matthews was an officer in the Continental American Army, commanding the 7th Massachusetts Regiment, New England Brigade, Second Division.

In the NWC, he joined La Grande Armée in 2012. Over the next 14 years Général Clint Matthews, Duc de Stockach et Engen earned 3,519 points and played 56 games. He commanded the 1ère Brigade, 1ère Division de Grosse Cavalerie, Réserve de Cavalerie. Prior to this he commanded the famed 1er Régiment de Carabiniers of the same brigade. At different points in years past he commanded the 1er Régiment de Chevau-légers lanciers de la Garde Impériale (Lanciers Polonais), La Moyenne Garde (The Middle Guard) and the 2ème Régiment de Chevau-légers lanciers de la Garde Impériale (Lanciers Rouges), La Vieille Garde (The Old Guard) of Napoleon's famous La Garde Impériale.

From all three clubs he earned 5,954 and would play 194 games, combined. 129 of those games were victories! A testament to his battlefield expertise.

Official Records for Clint's service with the CSA & Club can be viewed here, as part of the Memorial Page: https://www.wargame.ch/wc/acw/sub/ANV/Service_Records/Clint_Matthews_OBD.html

He was a great member and will be missed!

A Salute to Clint's Memory!
