This morning, National Public Radio broadcast the recollections of a 101 year old Confederate Veteran recorded some time in the 1950s. This was an actual voice recording of a veteran of the Civil War. His recollections included his volunteering for a local Cavalry regiment at the start of the war, being captured (by Gen. Sherman if I recall correctly) and his awakening in a POW camp one April morning in 1864 to see all the flags at half mast. He asked the guards why all the flags were at half mast & they replied that Lincoln had been shot. I was in a hurry rushing around the house trying to get to work so could not pay as close attention as I would have liked, but facinating stuff by any account. General Thos. You can listed to the archived broadcast of that portion of the show from the link on this page. Julius Howell of Bristol, VA, Company K, ?? Virginia cavalry, aged 16 1/2 as he says, captured by Sheridan two months prior to the end of the war, sent to Point Lookout, MD as a prisoner. Woke one morning to find flags at half staff. He was 101 years old in 1947 when he made this recording at the Library of Congress. Amazing to hear, and I can only hope I can speak as well when I am 101 years old! Wow!
