For those of us in the Peoples Demokratick Republick of Kalifornia (PDRK)...

CIVIL WAR SUBMARINE EXHIBIT COMING: The American Civil War Society, National Civil War Association and the War Between The States Historical Association will host the Hunley Mobile Exhibit on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Graceada Park. On Feb. 17, 1864, the submarine H.L. Hunley attacked the warship Housatonic, sinking it in a matter of minutes, making it the first submarine in the world to sink a ship. The submarine then sank and sat at the bottom of the Charleston, S.C., Harbor, for 136 years before being raised in August 2000. An exact replica of the submarine, staffed by members of the Hunley Team, is on tour in California. For more information, call Pat Parella at 575-5066.

Hey Dave,
Back in 2003 I emailed, the curator at the Sub museum in Groton, CT. who is a LCDR, asking him why they didn't have a exhibit on the Hunley and here corragious crew since she was the first sub to sink a ememy ship. His answer was that the Hunley was a CSS[:D] ship and not a USS ship[:p]

That doesn't surprise me. I followed the raising of the Hunley very closely, basically everything but moving to South Carolina, and it was intriguing the way the US Navy distanced itself from the whole thing.

In essence, the Friends of the Hunley Organization (www.hunley.org) was left to carry the burden. Sad that the government of the United States in no way wanted to get involved, but not unexpected given the traditional Navy reticence to acknowledge the efforts of the CSN.

Sorry, don't mean to sound bitter, but when one really understands what an amazing piece of machinery the Hunley was (is?) and the courage and dedication of the men who sailed her, it makes me angry that the US Navy (where I served as a submariner for 11 years) seems to not care.

I'll post the pics on my web site on Saturday night/Sunday morning...

Well... aparetnly there was a miscommunication between the City and the Hunley folks, so the display has been put off to the 2nd of August....
