Gentlemen, I am trying to get this letter across the lines in hope that someone from the South will read this. I am presently held at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. The condition here a terrible for the men. We are over crowded and the spirits of the men are down. I try my best as senior officer to keep their spirits up. We started to play this new game called baseball. Just a bunch of rags tied together to make a ball and they hit it with a bat. This can be very competetive at times and also funny when they run the wrong way or into each other trying to catch it.
I have known Nathan Vincent the superintendent before the war. We have spent many time fishing together. But a smile always went on his face when my wife prepared her famous fish dinner. He knows me as a friend but it is hard for him to look at me as the enemy. I have talked to him on numerous ocassions about the treatment of the boys. They need food and clothing. But his hands are tied by the Union war department.
He told me that they are building a new camp on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie for the officers from this camp. This camp will be completed in two months. I hear that winters can be very bitter there.
Tell my wife Donna and the children that I am fine. Also Willie my three legged one eyed war dog is still with me. The union soldiers feel sorry for him and at time are more compassionate towards him than me. This suits me fine.....

About the same as West Point ... with better food and nicer 'guards' [;)].
