| Post subject: | Stuart and Seven Pines |
I am wondering why Stuart and his cavalry is not present in the Seven Pines scenario. I think he was with Longstreet. He was not used becasue of the terrain but he should be available. I do not have the HPS Penisula Campaign but I believe the possible absence from Seven Days could be explained that his cavalry had other duties assigned. I know he had to guard the flank of Gen. Jackson's forces as they advanced into position,and recon the coming battle,in which he detached himself from the main body of the army and performed his great ride around McClellan's army. Perhaps he should of been included in the OOB just think this might be why he wasn't? He tried to repeat basically the same thing at Gettysburg and it got him in trouble. The main part of his force was available. The ride around the AoP was in mid June a couple of weeks away. Some forces were detached to cover the left and Jackson was still in the valley wreacking havoc. Stuart joined Jackson at Ashland just before the Seven days battle. In the current situation the Union has all of their cavalry and deploy it as needed giving them an advantage that cannot be negated with the availability of Stuart. It just seems it is reversed in the campaign with the Union having options and the CSA none. Just wondering what the rationale was unless I missed it in the game notes. In Thomas's biography of Stuart, "Bold Dragoon", Seven Pines gets a single paragrahpy. He states that since the wooded ground prevented massed cavalry action the cavalry was not used. I undesratnd that he did not bring his cavalry with him but they must have been in and around Richmond. Does anyone have any information as to the actual dispositions of the Cavalry regiments at that time? I cannot find any direct reference. He did leave the evirons of Richmond in mid June to ride around the AoP which indicates theywoudl have been in the Richmond area. Pierre, I believe Drew and I talked about that briefly during playtesting. From what I remember, I don't think there are any good sources as to exactly where around Richmond the Confederate Cavalry was during Seven Pines. Either that or there are conflicting sources. As a result, rather than have players use them ahistorically, Drew decided to leave them off of the map. This conversation happened over a year ago, so I might not be remembering this entirely correctly. Brett and Pierre, IIRC, (it has been a long time and I am without my notes), Stuart's cavalry was detached and sent north (off the map area covered by the game) and so was not involved at Seven Pines. I also believe I asked Steven Newton, an author of two books on the subject, this question a while back and he confirmed it.
