I'll grab an easy one (for me, I went to U of Minn for a year). Fort Snelling was built in 1825 where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers converge. It is in Minneapolis, Minnesota and can still be visited (I think). Your Humble servant, Brig Gen Mark E. Wolken I/Cav/XVI AoT |

Fort Meade is in South Dakota. I was there last year . Its used these days as a training center for the SD National Guard. They have a great museum there of Custer era stuff. They say this is where Custer launched out from on his mission to Little Big Horn. LTC D.H. Smith 2 BDE/3 Cavalry Divison/III Corps,AoA,CSA

I thought I remembered this, but Googling 'Ship Island' didn't even mention the name of the fort (although I did find a site with pictures of the fort). Well, Gen Mallory is getting closer to the Fort Massachusetts I am talking about. Strange, that there would be some MANY (well possibly three forts) named Massachusetts. Fort Benton was built by the American Fur Company in 1847. It was sold to the Military in 1865. When it was sold to the military, and thus became an official fort, it was located in the Montana Territory. Montana Territory was created in 1864. At the time of its original building, the area was a part of the Louisiana Purchase and had not yet been made an official territory of the U.S.. |
