I thought I found a pretty cool volume of books tonight. I was at a bookstore that specializes in publisher's overstock and used books where I came across volumes called "The War of Rebellion" by the National Historical Society. They had volumes 8, 10, 30, and a couple others as well as another set named "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of Rebellion" also by the National Historical Society. Each volume was about 1000 pages and covered a period of time in a certain theater. It contained copies of correspondence between officers as well as OOB and casualties for all units. Each book was $7.95, and some were still shrink-wrapped. I thought this was something special until I came home and googled this: http://ehistory.osu.edu/uscw/library/or/index.cfm which appears to be a freely accessible version of the entire set.

Well this seemed interesting to me and I thought some others may find it that way too.

Dirk,

The Army Official Records and the Navy Official Records are THE source. All Civil War research starts there. My dream is to own both sets some day.

I own the cd rom of the set and its a unbelievable source for information . My set cost me $70 at gettysburg . Just punch in what you want to find out and it comes up . with over 400 books on the civil war. I decided it was cost effective to buy the cd rom =)

The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies are at http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/brow ... /waro.html

The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion are at http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/brow ... /ofre.html

They are not available for purchase here (to my knowledge) but they can be researched and read.

If you want to buy them, used versions of the Naval series is available right now for $40 at http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/shop ... arketplace
The Army version should be easier to find but I failed to find it in a quick search so I guess that I quit looking too soon.
