Show basically backed up what I had read of the Hornets Nest a few years ago and what one of the Park Rangers had told me on one of my visits....I enjoyed it....Thanks for the heads up....Hank

Guys,

I've heard there is a "new theory" on the Hornet's Nest, and I missed the show. Can someone who watched it fill me in.

I did not see the show, but my understanding of the "new theory" regarding the Hornet's Nest is that there were not 17 charges made across the open field against the center of the Hornet's Nest, but rather a handfull of attacks against only the flanks, and that the reason the Hornet's Nest held on so long is because they weren't being attacked and didn't know the line on either side of them was being driven backward, and by the time it was realized, they were nearly surrounded and thus surrendered...

Off the top of my head the first time I saw this theory was in the book "Confederates in the Attic"....I could be wrong though. I do believe it is likely correct....Go to Shiloh....that field is almost empty of markers where units fought.....Likely meaning that they did not charge accross that ground......Hank
