Just finished watching "Field of Lost Shoes" with my wife, first time I'd ever seen it. If you haven't ever heard of it / seen it, it is the story of the battle of New Market, VA during the North's invasion of the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. The corps of cadets at the Virginia Military Institute were called up as reserves with the Confederate regulars. Initially intended to be held in reserve by Gen. Breckenridge, after 2 regular regiments broke and routed in the center of the Confederate lines, the VMI cadets were sent in to plug the gap. They did even more than that - they charged (apparently completely on their own without orders to do so), routed the Union troops opposite them, and captured a cannon. To this day, it is the only time in US military history that an entire student body was sent into battle and the battle was won.

The battlefield is called the Field of Lost Shoes because most of the cadets lost their shoes in the bog during their charge of the Union lines.

DVD has a special feature on it that explains that every year, the freshmen take the VMI oath on the New Market battlefield and charge across the same field that their predecessors charged in 1864. The 1864 cadets are remembered each year during ceremonies. Out of the 274 who charged that day, 10 lost their lives.

Thought it was a good movie, overall...anyone else seen it??

Yes, I remember seeing it too some time ago now tho, if indeed the same movie. Very well done and the lines "God, forgive me. Send in the boys." were brilliant. Thanks for reminding me.
