Post subject:  FIRST BULL RUN

While visiting my daughter in Clifton, Virginia, just a few miles down the road from the battlefields of Manassas, I spent a few hours wandering around Henry House Hill and Matthews Hill, the Stone Bridge, and environs. Upon returning to California, I decided to re-read William C. Davis's "Battle at Bull Run." A battle book always means more when one has wandered the terrain in question, as I'm sure you all know. For example, reading in a book that Rickett's Union battery unlimbered south of the Henry house, fairly close to the Confederate line, is one thing. But being there in person, turning back and forth, and exclaiming on the bare three hundred yards that separated the two lines of cannons, is quite another thing. The proximity of the Visitors Center was convenient, for one of the kind gentlemen found there was able to put things in a nice perspective from the Center's back landing.
