Can anyone recommend a good bio on Sheridan? |

Little Phil by Eric Wittenberg. I try to usually read Civil War histories written by professional historians, but Wittenberg--a lawyer by trade-- does a good job of reevaluating Sheridan's career. Spoiler alert: he is highly critical. |

Thanks for the input. I went with Terrible Swift Sword and, I have to say, I'm not too impressed yet. |

http://www.impedimentsofwar.org/singleshow.php?show=129 Here is an interview with Wittenberg from 2005. In it (part three) he covers his feelings on Sheridan which are not at all flattering. Basically, Sheridan was a rogue general who did his own thing and couldn't follow orders. He believes Grant's indulgence of his insubordination was based on a personal friendship and admiration (and also probably a dislike of the eastern army generals who followed the rules too much). |

Sheridan-The life & wars of Gen. Phil Sheridan by Roy Morris, Jr. This is my favorite book on Sheridan. |
