<Salute>

Gentlemen,

I have the Matrix collection of Battleground Civil War and the more I look through the scenario's the more indecisive I get.

I am better at Napoleonic s than I am at ACW (not by much ;-) )

Chickamaga map defeats me never mind the opponent! I can't seem to move around like I want to. I am playing FBR which is terrain I can cope with.

Would like suggestions for a "fair" game other than FBR?

:idea: Have you ever tried Stone's River? It is hidden in the HPS Chickamauga game, as is Chattanooga and Perryville, but Stone's River is one of those games where the odds between the two armies were not that large. Anything can happen.
I also recommend that if you have an interest in any of those battles that you pick up the corresponding book by Pete Cozzens. "The Shipwreck of Their Hopes, No Better Place to Die, or This Terrible Sound."

Fair? You want fair?

The game hasn't been invented that is fair. Even chess, the most perfectly balanced game of all is not fair, because white has the first move.

As a huge Battleground fan, my experience is almost all the scenarios are sufficiently well balanced that ultimate victory depends mostly on the relative skill of the opponents and only to a small extent on luck. A glance at the Dept of Records will prove either side can win almost any scenario. Granted, the short scenarios are most prone to the roll of the dice. But other than that - they are all playable and enjoyable.

How to equalize the games when opponents are unequal in skill or experience? Easy. When setting up the mod adjust the play balance needle to tilt one way or the other. It goes all the way from 100% rebel advantage to 100% union advantage and everything in between. You can make any scenario as 'fair' as you want.

These are the scenario results from the days when BG was the only game in town:

Compliments to General Simms for a most valuable peek at game playing history.

Okay.

Thinking I may mainly stick to Napoleonics then as apart from FBR I have not found a map I like. :-(

Hopefully will get better with experience and be able to enjoy the other scenario's.

Glad that it is servicable for you. I can only claim a small part. Mark Nelms compiled the data from the club records every month and I took that and added it into the color coded chart format. It was on the old Link Express for years and that is where this link is to. Warning though, the old Link Express hasn't been updated in at least a couple of years but for this chart, it doesn't make any difference. Roger Hulinksy has a new Link Express available for everyone to use. This chart is good info for games that have been played a lot. For those games that have been played only about 10 times, the info is more iffy because it will include the results of those who went AWOL from a game or a highly talented player playing someone with less experience, etc. The more games played, the more reliable the results as far as determining a balanced game.
