Sirs,

I just received the following email from Tom's sister:

Hi Blake,

I wanted to let you know that my brother, Lt. Gen. Tom Phillips, passed away on Friday evening - March 24, 2023. He was 66 years old and had lived with a pacemaker since he was 8.

He loved playing in the Civil War Club, and was especially grateful to receive a Lifetime Achievement Medal for the Confederacy in January.

Please feel free to share his passing (into the next much grander life) with The Club. And please thank them all for sharing their love with my brother all these years.

Sincerely,
Denise Frey

Obviously, I am surprised and saddened. I didn't know Tom well on a personal level but he was always a stalwart in the Club and someone who could always be counted on for a game or a friendly interaction.

Tom had just passed the remarkable number of 1,000 total games completed in the DOR this year.

SALUTE

I am saddened to hear of the passing of one of our members, Tom Phillips, whose name I have become familiar with over the past year, whilst not having the pleasure of his acquaintance personally. He was taken far too early. My deepest condolences to his sister, family and friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

<SALUTE> Sir

RIP
I didn't know Tom that well. We just met and started a John Tiller Battleground Chickamauga Scenario at the end of February.

I was introduced to General Philips years ago, in one of our sister clubs (the Colonial Campaigns Clubs). He will be missed.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Tom's passing. We have had countless battles over several eras in various clubs over the years. Perhaps the nicest opponent I have had in the club and a true gentleman. I shall miss our games greatly and will miss his camaraderie even more. RIP, my friend.

Gentlemen, Sirs! <salute>

I am indeed sadden at the news of the passing of my dear gaming Friend Thomas Phillips. I would like to share a few things about Tom.

I first met Tom when he joined our gaming Club on February 12, 2006 and the next month I appointed him as Dean of Cadets to look out for our newbies. He had a terrific first impression with all that he met in the gaming club.

Later that year and the following year I had an opportunity to spend a couple weekends with Tom and a couple other Club members visiting American Civil War Battlefields in Northern Virginia and West Virginia when Tom was living in Richmond. We had a wonderful time enjoying our camaraderie and sharing our love of the America Civil War History.

Tom always remained faithful to the ACWGC and his other gaming venues as he enjoyed making new Friends!

He was a ferocious gamer, I cannot count how games that he played during his time here but he had started 13 games just since the beginning of this year with the last game started on March 22!

I will miss him terribly as I could always count on him to always greet the new members and treat all with tender kindness!

With a heavy heart, I am,

Respectfully,

Your Obedient Servant,

General Nick Kunz

2nd Corps, AoT

Gentlemen,

I am deeply saddened by this news.

I am struck by the thought of how much courage, determination, and tenacity must have been required to live with a pacemaker since childhood. It's an awful hand to be dealt & yet when I came across General Phillips, he was always cheerful & positive.

Few of us will ever achieve the remarkable gaming record of General Phillips & I am extremely moved to hear from Tom's sister, Denise, how much he loved playing with our Club.

I will think some more about how it might be appropriate for the ACWGC to mark the immense legacy of General Phillips. To that end, I would be extremely grateful if Tom's friends might contact me with any suggestions you might have?

It's always a hard day when we lose one of our own. Tom has crossed the river & I hope he is now at rest under the shade of the trees.

*SALUTE*

I briefly met Tom in a tournament game last year. He was great to converse with and a good player.

Salute.

Heartfelt sorrow for a tremendous gamer and friend. He always made time for anyone that reached out. He will be missed. Hat in hand, sword drawn in salute - farewell to a brother in arms.

Thank you for sharing this sad news. I had the honor of playing a few games with Tom over the years. His steady hand will be missed around the table.

I am very sad to hear of Tom's passing. I had never played against him, but he was very welcoming when I became division commander.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him

Truly sad news, played a bunch of Ozark many years ago against him and was not only a capable guy to play against but also a nice one.
Condolences to his family & friends.

Quite a shock. I had just traded emails with Tom on Friday afternoon (we were just starting Day 2 of Stonewall At Gettysburg). I shall miss him. He was a fine gentlemen and a pleasure to game with.

Gents Tom's passing is a big loss to our club and to me personally. We were both members of the Army of Georgia, then we both moved to the Army of the West and then the Army of Tennesse. We have had plenty of communication over the years, although unfortunately we never met in person. He was always willing to help with club admin and if you wanted a battle he would always oblige.
