Hi Dierk,

Ok, well that makes sense doesn't it? You have a company of men in a hex and 2 artillery pieces. 2 companies of the enemy attack you. The infantry are flexible and can move and bend with the attack, the artillery can't. So, if they're lucky 1 of the guns can stay behind freindly lines while the other may not be so lucky. Additionally, the crews of these guns are defenseless without their field pice, so it's quite possible they could be killed quickly in any close quarters fighting that may take place...

Don't forget that cannons were not placed <i>within</i> a line of infantry, but some paces before that line or on the flanks in the intervals between the battalion/regiments. When the gunners were unable to run and hide behind the infantry, they were lost. The <i>Battlegrounds</i> had these options: recrewing artillery in the ACW-games and overruning but not destroying artillery protected by infantry squares in the Napy-games.
