Greetings:

I would like to receive some tips to play the game battles more historical. I play MAW but I think that it could apply for any EAW game.

According to the Mexican Infantry Regulation of the time (that sould be more or less the same regulation of any other army), the army battalions have two formations for battle:
1) Battle line formation (fire).
2) Attack column formation (meele and bad terrain for maneuver).

In game terms, they sould look like these (also based on CCC Regimental Unit Integrity House Rule)

For game purposes:
1) Battle line formation: all companies should be allowed to fire.
2) Attack column formations: only 2 companies should be allowed to fire (because it es assumed that only 2 companies are in the head of the column).
¿Is that correct?

Also, I dont read about any other kind of independent battle maneuver with units below battalion level ¿It is historical accurate to make any other kind of formation with the companies beside the rigid battle line, column formation or square?

For example ¿like in this picture?

¡This is all for now, thanks for your answers!

Regrettably, for the illustration you are making, the Game Engine does not permit Combat Fire or Defensive Fire while in Column Formation,

although it does permit Melee while in Column Formation.

Thank you for sharing. Most informative.

Salut!

Yes, the game engine dont permit fire in column Formation but this could work as a house rule. An entire Battalion could be concentrated in 2 adjacent hexes in line Formation and the player Is only allowed to fire with 2 companies but can meele with all.

This could be historical correct?

Thanks for your answer!

Basically what you're asking for is -redesign this to fit into the Musket and Pike series engine where you can fire from column (if you set up the parameter data table fields to do so -and can adjust to varying levels).

I'm not putting my hand up to do it, as I have enough other stuff that I want to do -but that's essentially the only viable answer. Redo the maps (make whatever adjustments in terrain from one engine to the next) - and then the other adjustments look relatively easy to adapt - I mean it isn't like taking an Native American force that isn't structured even remotely similarly and then coming up with an engine OOB for it - let alone apportion weapons (or abstracting a distribution) and coming up with any sort of viable indigenous command structure .... Mexican American War is not nearly to that level.

I was just asking if the formations in the pictures were historical accurate or not.
