Post subject:  Origins of "Uncle Sam"

My employer gave out little U.S. flag lapel pins the other day to everyone and the card on the back reads:

"Uncle Sam, the symbol of the United States all over the world, is based on a real person who was born in 1766 in Arlington Massachusetts. Samuel Wilson gained his fame in the meat packing business in Troy, New York, where he moved as a young boy. There, during the War of 1812, he contracted to supply the U.S. Army with meats which were packed in cases stamped "U.S. Wilson". Soldiers in the Army began to call the beef "Uncle Sam's" and said that "Uncle Sam" was taking care of them. As the Uncle Sam legend spread, Samuel Wilson was in constant demand for appearances at meetings and clubs. His place in history became official on September 15, 1961 when Congress passed a joint resolution recognizing "Uncle Sam Wilson" as the progenitor of America's national symbol."

Perhaps even more interesting though, and disappointing, is the phrase at the bottom of the card, "Made in China". [V]

Good Memorial Day to all and God bless our troops! [:)]
