Post subject:  A most interesting find

I picked up a four volume set of books from Inter-Library Loan, yesterday. <u>History of the Campaign on the Niagara Frontier</u> edited by one Ernest Cruikshank. It is a compilation of reports, letter, orders, newspaper accounts, etc of the War of 1812 along the Niagara river. Very good stuff, imo.

In one order, this one give in 1812 to the 89th, they were instructed to leave thier "two boy companies..." What the heck does that mean? I'm guessing the two companies with least senority filled with newest recruits.

In another order (British) dated 14 Aug '14 detailing the assault plan and OOB for the attack on Ft Erie, I found, "The Lieut.Gen <i>most strongly recommends a free use of the bayonet.</i>" I did not add the italics, they were in the book. So evidently these words were stressed in the orginal order. The LtGen was Drummond, btw.

All in all a good find. I have found orders given and after action reports written for about 4 battles that previously have only been alluded to, or skipped over in the history books I've read before on the topic.
