[This post has nothing to do with analyzing scenarios. - Signed, Darth Statistics] As I come to understand the personal views of many of the CCC membership, I thought I would share some of my own views about how the 1776 engine can be promoted in a way that brings significant revenues to the designer (and thus funding future upgrades) and at the same time advances awareness of the American Revolution by the "unwashed" masses. I have frequently been surprised by how instructive it can be to load a historical scenario and put both sides on Automatic. By zooming out to the maximum, I am able to watch at least one version of how the battle unfolded. While it is impossible to say which movements or deployments are more historical than others, the overall "shape" of the conflict and initial arrangement of the forces are usually very helpful. Afterall, this is where a majority of the investment for each new period/engine is placed! And this invested energy and attention to detail would be a real boon to many a highschool or collegiate ROTC unit, or even regular history courses. The 1776 engine is a virtual "encyclopedia" of the conflicts ... with officer names and unit names. So I've been contemplating the best way to get the "good news" out to ROTC units and history classes around the country. Perhaps there could even emerge some low-grade competition between classes or ROTC units for the Battle of Bunker Hill or some other popular battle. I believe it would be overly optimistic to think that there would be much **sustained** use of the engine on an individual basis. The battles take quite an investment in time, and there are lots of tokens to move. But if I were a student in a unit or class studying military tactics, I would certainly want to test one tactic against another (or one OOB against another) as part of my grade! But getting the software out to even a small percentage of history classes and ROTC units would still represent a rather sizeable number of software sales.... and maybe even paid for by school budgets! Something to think about! It would be great to speed the funding for future enhancements!! Regards, George Brooks |
