Well actually it was a gift and I have mentioned it here before on more than one occasion, but David Wilson's The Southern Strategyis a wargamer's dream.

I took this on a trip this weekend and it has been great reading (rather than browsing.) For the most part, each chapter discusses one battle or campaign in detail. Both strategies and tactics are discussed as relevant to the battle. David Wilson has drawn a clean and clear map for the battles showing terrain, deployments and movements. Battles have oobs included showing manpower. The author uses primary sources and corrects occasional errors that are in popular circulation. (Or if he does not correct them at least discusses conflicting data.)

The book runs through the battle of Waxhaws in 1780, and I am hopeful that he will be able to continue his work through the end of the war in a scond volume. (Though there were also 2 nice woks on Yorktown out last year as well.)

This and 2004's
Washington's Crossing by DH Fischer are two books that club members should not be without.
