OK, I have just tried the "Cowpens" scenario against the AI and here are some observations about version 8.0

For those who play with the sound card on there are some groovy new background sounds. Wagons going by, officer banter, clanking of ropes and traces etc...Love those horses!

A new symbol showing when a unit is enfiladed! This is great, and it works. Every time I moved a unit in to enfilade another unit, it was shown on the unit icon. Beware though, if you move in to enfilade an enemy unit, you yourself can be enfiladed if you merely 'turn' to face the enemy not regarding the position of other enemy units. I'm hoping that this feature alone will encourage players to play a more linear game.

It's more expensive now to move units across open terrain. The 3 mps per hex does take some getting used to. It's subtle but definitely makes a difference.

Units disrupt in forest now. I have mixed feelings about this. It seems correct but there are many scenarios that begin with units in woods, such as Guilford Courthouse, Saratoga etc...This will effect the time available to fight out the battle with so many units disrupted automatically. Of course it may cut down on melee too, which is a good thing. Judge is out on this one and it remains to be seen if it will work or not.

I'm still seeing those oddities in fire combat that exist in all of the HPS games when playing with single turn play. I sure wish this could be fixed. You know the kind of stuff I mean. You move in adjacent to an enemy company, he fires at you and inflicts '1 man'. You wisely decided to hold your fire until getting to point blank range and now you open up. Result '1 man'. Meanwhile another enemy unit four hexes away fires at you and inflicts '1 man". Then the adjacent enemy unit fires at you again and for a final insulte inflicts '2 men'. The other little oddities still occur, an enemy unit moves adjacent to you but your unit 'auto fires' at somebody three hexes away.

Overall though, I am pleased with the new upgrades. They have reduced the stacking level which I am very pleased with and the text file describes all kinds of other nifty changes that we have needed for some time now (like Bridge repair)
