Sorry for the long post, but I thought that those of you in New England may find the following events of great interest. What a variety of events! Go to http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/ for all details. Friday, August 15 – Sunday, August 17, 2008Boston Common, Boston, MA Event:British Encampment on Boston Common The British Are Coming--Again! Over 20 companies of 18th century British army re-enactors set up a replica of the original camp on Boston Common. The Traying Ground becomes a living history site where children and families can participate in the daily life of a British soldier. Activities and demonstrations are scheduled throughout the weekend which include drills, cooking, making clothes and shoes, repairing equipment, medicine tents, musket firings, a small skirmish with colonists, music and meet and greets with the re-enactor soliders. Join a special tour of Dorchester Heights to see where ingenious colonists accomplished one of the first major victories of the American Revolution. Visit the campsite of the Red Coats who held Bostonians in a vice-like grip during the Siege of Boston. They haven't been here since 1776! Friday, August 15, 2008 | 11am – 1pmMuseum of African American History, 46 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02114 Event: Black Bostonians of the Revolutionary War Era Come and learn about Revolutionary War era leaders such as Prince Hall and Colonel George Middleton and how they and other early African American activists in Boston laid the foundation for the Abolition Movement and the early struggles for equal rights. Sunday, August 17, 2008 | 2 – 3:30pmFreedom Trail Foundation Event:Dorchester Heights Trolley Tour Join a trolley tour from the Boston Common to Dorchester Heights on Sunday, August 17, at 2 pm. The 90 minute tour begins from the Common on Charles Street and will be led by a National Park Service Ranger at Dorchester Heights. Please note there are no facilities at Dorchester Heights and you must be able to climb stairs to participate. Tickets are non-refundable. Driving the British from Boston required months of grueling work for the colonists in New York and Massachusetts Bay. On the night of March 4, 1776, colonial militia and local volunteers stealthily fortified the summit of Dorchester Heights. Within a few days, British General Howe, his troops, and 1,000 colonial loyalists set sail for Nova Scotia, abandoning the city to Washington's forces and its jubilant citizens. The Siege of Boston was over.
