Post subject:  Column as March Column

These are some ideas I've mulled about to help deal with the issues of "column" in the game, and the fact that they can be used too easily in entirely unhistorical ways.

One of the problems we need to keep in mind, is that in some ways, different "rules" should exist for FIW/1776 on one side, and 1812/MAW on the other. While there were some experiments (largely by France) in the 7YW, there's no doubt that the Wars of the French Revolution "changed the playbook" for infantry. What we know of as Assault Column just simply wasn't in the drillbook of the armies of the early era.

So, my thoughts here are really more fitting for FIW/1776 than for 1812/MAW

1) Increase the Column fire penalty. In other words, you take MORE losses for taking fire in column than it is currently set.
2) Use the Nap rule that D units cannot change formation
3) Add a -1 (or even -2) modifier to the morale check if a unit takes fire in column. In other words, make it more likely to rout.

Now, alot of this is speculative, but I am curious to see what you think.
