I did a search for marching speeds and found the following article. It is an in depth scientific analysis on possible Roman Legion marching speeds titled - Observations on marching Roman legionaries: velocities, energy expenditure, column formations and distances. http://www.bandaarcgeophysics.co.uk/arch/Roman_legionary_marchingV2.html While it doesn't directly reference Napoleonic armies, the principles discussed obviously apply to any foot soldier in any period. Amongst other things, it compares those speeds to modern soldiers, the need to regulate daily distances based on water availability, and departure and arrival times for large multiple formations. One interesting point was the suggestion that Roman soldiers might have had an advantage over their modern day counterparts since they apparently carried their gear suspended on a pole resting on their shoulder, allowing one of the legionaries arms to be used as a counter balance to that weight. This allowed the legionary to march with a more upright posture. Modern soldiers using a pack are forced to lean forward to balance the weight hanging off their back, causing a number of small but adverse physiological effects. As a bonus, there are a number of links on the side menu to a number of other related topics, especially the Romans in Britain, and an analysis of potential battle sites for the final battle of Boudica's rebellion. |
