Okay, now that we're on the topic.

How does one abbreviate the following? (remember we're talking how did they do it back then.)

Compagnie - I have seen cie
Bataillon - I have seen bon
Brigade - I have seen bde
Division - ???
Corps - ???

It appears that the first and last two letters are to be used. Is this a known rule? Is division and corps spelled the same in French and English? How about ranks?

I've seen cne for captain, but I don't know the exact spelling in French.

I've seen GdB, or Gén de Brig Géneral de Brigade. So would GdD, or Gén de Div be used for Géneral de Division?

What about the abbreviation Adt-Cmdt? Is this rank equivilent to Major?

...and all those chefs... de bataillon, d'escadron?

Obviously I'm working on an OOB file for HPS Waterloo, but I also am working on new FIW material so lower ranks of the Ancient Regime are important to me, too.

We have the knowledge and capability to put the proper titles of the various nations into their natural language, and I don't see why we don't. (Overall statement about game construction, HPS Nap games have been very good using multiple languages.[:)])
