Ok it's fiction... I am still waiting for your source. I would be very much interested to know more about that good general.

I was reading Mes Mémoires by Alexandre Dumas (his son) who tells the story of his father and said questioned his aide de camps Dermoncourt about the part in Egypt. And I have found nothing about a duel. Of course, the dialogue you have in your story can be found in French online at google books.

PS: in French we say
- noir
- Le Chevalier de Saint Georges

So the next question is... where did John Gallaher found the account of the duel between Junot and Dumas?

And by the way, you are the one who triggered an interest in that story for me  . I do believe you, I just wonder how in the world his son didn't say anything about it in his memoirs... Or why Junot's wife is talking about one of his others duel with Francois Lanusse in Egypt (where Junot lost, so I guess the losing is not the problem) and nothing about Dumas?

added later.

A few dates:
The insurrection of Cairo 21st of October 1798
Dumas leaves Egypt on La Belle Maltaise the 7 march 1799 (with him Dolomieu and Cordier, 2 scientists http://annales.org/archives/cofrhigeo/c ... rdier.html) So the duel between Dumas and Junot will have to be before 7 March 1799.

Lanusse/Junot duel must happen before the departure of Bonaparte from Egypt which is the 24 of August 1799. Junot is still recovering from his injuries at the time of Bonaparte's departure.
