Napoleonic Wargame Club (NWC)

I very much want to purchase the new Leipzig game, but it appears to be only available via download. I suppose I am just and "old school fool," but I would very much rather have it in CD format.

Is it available on CD?

Will it be available on CD soon?

Is it possible to do the download onto a writable CD? If so, how?

The game is available via download only. Once you download the Installer you can write it to a CD and then install it on a 2nd PC or just keep the CD for safekeeping but note: you can always use the PATH sent to you with the serial code to download the file again and again. Thus your Installer file will always be available.

It is 200 MB in size - took me with cable about 5-6 mins. I think though I did not time it completely.

All of the John Tiller Software products sold at John's website are sold via download only. His older games are still on CD and are being converted to Digital Download as well. For instance Campaign Eckmuhl is now available via download as well as CD.

I find the lack of a CD to be no problem. Just have a decent connection speed and go for it. You will need to be connected to the internet when you go to Activate the program. This occurs the first time you start up the game. You must enter in a Serial code and then press OK and at that point the Activation process begins.

Once activated you do not need to be connected to the internet to play the game.

You can easily save the installation file to a CD or backup hard drive (as the case may be).

I'd suggest that you burn the files to a CD, and ALSO burn onto that CD a .txt file with the Serial Number.

The download files of John's games tends to be between 200-300Meg (Kharkov '43 is the biggest at around 307 Meg), so they can easily be stored on CD.

My computer died last week and I had to reload a JTS game on my new machine (Tunisia). I was able to transfer the old downloaded installer on to an exterior hard drive and then install it on the new machine just fine. So, like Gary says, as long as you make your own "hard copy," you should be fine.

Yes, a copy of the installer is useful on CD - I have a USB drive I use to port it over to other PCs. That is actually faster and more reliable.

Just get yourself a USB 2.0 flash drive and use your USB port.

Just remember - all of your information and the installer can be retrieved again if you contact JTS support. So never fear - your info is safe and the installer is always there for you to get again.

I certainly understand the reasons for doing so. A lot of game companies do this now. I'd be curious how this will impact gamers in foreign countries or here in the US that have spotty internet and whether in a few months or a year there is some signs of whether a "No CD" option is good for sales or hurts it.

Not criticizing at all Bill, always wonder about trends & impacts....that's all... Maybe you can let us know in 6 months or so....

Time will tell Scott on the overall decision to go with DDR but I like it very much. No more CD to have to keep around. I can get to the Installer almost 24/7.

Ever had a cracked CD or one that would not work right? Right when you most needed the software? Happened at work one time. We loved to put as many of our standard CDs up on the server CD jukebox for quicker installs. Put the CD on the shelf and forget about it. But CDs go bad. Not so with the installers unless you had a bad download session.

Folks were in an uproar last year. But lose your CD and you get to pay I think 5 bucks to replace it. Lose your Leipzig, Kharkov '43, SB:Modern Wars or say Tunisia '43 installer - hey, its right there on the server. Go get coffee and a donut while it downloads and come back and install it when you like.

And you really do not have to make a backup to CD with the new installer. Its ALWAYS there for the most part unless your internet goes down or you have to install it to a work PC where they do not allow you to do personal downloads.

The only problem would be taking John's new DDR games to the South Pole. But maybe they have satellite internet there ....

Oh for sure there are many great benefits. I think the download thing is a wise option.

Maybe if there are issues a download & CD would be available to help things progress. But this is something HPS fans have asked them to do for years, so it is good to see John doing it now...

Initially I preferred a disk but now I think DD has a lot of benefits, as Bill has outlined. I can only think of one opponent who is adamant about having a CD.

Like the idea about burning the serial number.

Downloading is the way to go. Keep a backed up copy. I think Tiller has the right DRM balance as well. Once on install and thats it. Easy and not overly intrusive.

I would never keep the installer and the serial number on a CD. If it gets stolen someone has your code. At that point you would just want to get with Rich Hamilton and get them to get you a new serial code I guess ...

Everything can be retrieved from Rich and John. Installer, code you name it. Its a great system.

The installer downloads in minutes and you can go get breakfast and coffee while waiting on it ...
