All the material from Nirproject should work, there were no engine changes. Only thing modified by Matrix is the start.exe file so it now works with Vista. Try manually installing the files into the subfolders for the various games. I think it's more of an installation problem with Matrix or at your end.

There are problems with nirproject games, many weren't playtested for game balance. Unit qualities (mainly French) are way too high; LoS is dodgy; artillery way too powerful.

My experience of Nirproject was that the games were usually very pro French, most units being Q6 or more (Guards rating) whereas the allies were usually down at 3 or 4. Try finding an allied opponent. French artillery were killing machines. LoS was faulty. I played a large number of scenarios (several dozen in fact) so had a lot of experience. My take is not to bother. Playtesting for balance wasn't really carried out. I can't think of a single scenario I won as allies and some of my opponents were very inexperienced. The Great Campaign In Russia was a prime example. Others will disagree I'm sure. Nirproject did a great job in keeping the genre alive but things have really moved on since then.

Given time HPS will be covering all the Napoleonic period.

Excellent it would seem we finally have a game series with accurate morales.
I would prefer all allied forces to be E grade and French A to A++.

No seriously I have played the Austerlitz mod which I really enjoyed (before HPS)
It was quite balanced and I also am of the view the French infantry at Austerlitz was the best France ever had so the morales are not that inaccurate at least for that one.

It was not as well researched as Bill's HPS version but good fun never the less.

Well it was an amateur work, they didn't plan on selling anything.

None the less, it was a good project at its time (must be 10 years old and we are still talking about it).
