Gentlemen

When a cavalry commences a charge from the hex adjacent to the unit to be charged does it get a charge bonus, if so why :?:
I assume even light horse would take a reasonable amount of distance and time to get up to charge momentum.

Jim,

This what the user guide says:

Cavalry Charge Rules
Certain melees are considered to be Cavalry Charges. When this occurs, the
attacking strength of eligible Cavalry is increased by a factor which is by
default 3. The specific factor used is determined by Parameter Data. For a
Cavalry Charge to occur, the following rules must hold:
• The attacking Cavalry units must have moved using the Cavalry Charge
procedure.

To me that reads they have to have moved at least one hex after they charge. I don't think adjacent meets that criteria.

Interesting as if you chose to charge in the adjacent hex starting position the first melee may not have an advantage but the 2nd and 3rd do so its effectively a two thirds charge :D

Ed is exactly correct. There is no charge bonus if you attack an adjacent unit; full charge bonus if you have moved a hex before attacking (the bonus varies from x3 to x5 depending on the game
title being played); and the charge bonus and disorder penalty if this is your second melee, even if your first melee occurred against an adjacent unit (ex. x5 divided by 3).

The moral of the story: If you are going to charge, make certain that you can move at least one hex before engaging in melee.

P.S. I wrote this in English so the Frenchies could not read it. Very clever, eh?

Ah, but Herr Jones, do not forget the skirmisher corollary. If you "charge" an adjacent skirmisher in a building, the melee will not disorder the cavalry, who are then free to inflict misery upon any hapless units they find in clear terrain behind said building, using the full effect of the 5X charge multiplier.

Certainly true, Marechal Bardon. There are exceptions to every rule. One must never cease to think, lest an officer of your immense talent should instantaneously lay waste to an otherwise formidable defense.

Hi Jeff

For "Building" do I read "Village" as I always thought that "Gentlemen" didn't initiate a charge into covered terrain. Of course it only applies to "Gentlemen" which automatically excludes all Frenchies :D

Hi Jim,

No, single building. Villages, woods, orchards, etc. will disorder the cav, so it is especially handy for those times when you have a whole company of Coldstream guards hiding in an outhouse. :mrgreen:

I think you may be confusing this with the fact that we approach the French from downwind. This makes them quite easy to detect due to their infernal perfume. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:
