Post subject:  Hard Drive Repair ...

By the beginning of next week I will mail off my damaged hard drive (dropped on a tile floor) to see if it can be repaired rather than go the more costly data recovery route. Am hoping that the initial check of the drive shows that it can be fixed.

What is on the drive:

1. 15 years of development materials for JTS games. Includes a western Brie plateau map section I was working on to create the largest map I have ever done.

2. All dev. work on my Fortress Metz module for Slitherine.

3. New design work ideas.

4. More great stuff ...

To try and recover it all would probably cost a lot of money. Am hoping that it is something that can be fixed .... the drive clicks on a regular basis when it is powered on.

I was usually very good about doing backups. I had a setup that I was using, however, that used up all of my hard drives (3). When I did backup that drive to another drive I then used that drive to try and build a larger system drive for Windows XP but the install wouldnt work. I thus overwrote my backup.

I was terribly low on funds and unable to afford another hard drive. So there you have it. When I dropped the drive many months ago that was the one that had all of my work on it. I did find some of the work up on John's server. Leaders.bmp spreadsheet for the 1813 games for instance.

Hoping that once I get the drive restored to have more redundancy again.

To be save I would go even further and do multiple backups over various forms of data carriers.
- I do daily backups on 2 USB Sticks, if something happens while one is connected there is always the other.
- I do weekly backups on 2 backup HDs, if something happens while one is connected there is always the other.
- I do quarterly backups on optical disk(DVD or BluRay).

Company received my hard drive on Wednesday ... waiting to hear back from them ... hoping the cost to repair will be low. $60 is minimum and $200 is max ...

Good luck!

Another form of Backup is the onine backup, I'm not a friend of putting my data in someone else hands but it can come handy as a form of backup that you could access likely from all over the world.

Yes, cloud servers. I dont like the idea myself of putting my proprietary data on them. I store my game builds on John's server. Old material I keep on my own drives.

I have an overlay for the West Brie map for the 1814 game that is something like half a gig in size ... I would not want to upload that to a server ... ;)

Got a quote for $2067 for repair of the hard drive to include getting the file system back in order. As this will not guarantee that any of the files that I need will be recovered I will just pass on getting it fixed.

This is not a life or death issue so it can wait. They are returning the drive to me and someday when the Rockefellers find that I am in their family tree I may have the funds to repair the drive ... but not now! :russianveryhappy:

I was able to find original versions of some of my PDF files - the Terrain Effects Chart from Leipzig for instance. Also the PDT file breakdown - original version which is in the Design folder of the 1813-1814 games.

But gone are:

The West Brie Plateau overlay I was using to build that map for 1814. Now this could be recovered using a French topo website I had found ... if I can find it again!

The Weapons Effects Chart (WEC.PDT - the original spreadsheet) - this can be recreated. I can use the values found in the PDT file and just redo it again.

All of my classic car images from Boise car shows (not a huge loss but still good stuff ... and had my friends cars in them)

All overlays I had used for map making for the previous games.

Other files that I was hoping to recover ....

Again, not a huge loss and I will just move on in life to do other work.

Actually I have blanked out a lot of the things I dont have anymore. A library that needed 42 U Haul "Small Box" to carry them in. My back doesnt miss it at all! Some books I have gotten on Kindle for only $2.99 as I bought them direct from Amazon. I was able to download a spreadsheet of all of my purchases with Amazon. Truly a long list of items!
