Risk has a huge following online ... I was a member of a website where you could play Risk with other folks. It was terribly cutthroat but sometimes you could find cooperative players.
My first "wargame" I played with our family.
Dad loved "Dogfight" one of the American Heritage games. We also had the Broadsides and the ACW game in that series. A friend of mine owned the Hit the Beach game and I enjoyed playing that one as well.
I sent in for a island wargame - found out about it via a box top label. The map was plastic - so were the pieces. Forget the name of it but again, the idea was to take the island.
I also played "Battleship" to death too

... my brother and I sat out in his camper in the front drive and played a couple of games together one memorable Christmas. Great place for brothers to left alone for an important naval operation!
