In Leipzig, there are units described as "sappers". What is the function of these units? They cannot repair bridges so they aren't pioneers. There is nothing is the User Manual that I can find. Anybody?

Hey Ken,

In Leipzig unleashed the French Sappers are marked as Pioneers which allows them to repair bridges, right?

Perhaps the scenario you're in has a coding error.

I just went through the base Leipzig.oob file and all the Sappers, Pontooniers, Enginiers are all coded "P" which allows them to repair bridges.

Al, the scenario is the Bonus 1. The Battle of Leipzig. Probably the same in all the Bonus scenarios.

Thanks. I looked at the scenario in TextPad and it uses Leipzig_Nations_alt. oob. All Sapper, Pionier, Pontooniers, and other technical troops are coded with 'P'.

Historically, Sappers and Miners were for sieges and not for bridging rivers, I suppose Bill allowed all technical troops in an OOB to repair bridges, since ordinary troops were known to do it all the time. Many of the 'destroyed' bridges at the time were simply those where the planking was removed and placed on the non-enemy side of the river.* Troops would go across the framework, think of walking balance beams, and replace the planking. Probably the "sappers" within infantry unit lead the way or at least supervised the work.

*Many bridges were wooden construction and would be disabled in this manner to hinder, slow down or prevent an enemy from crossing in a way that resulted in the least amount of damage to the bridge so it could be restored once the armies went away. Therefore, not ruining the local economy or traffic flow.

Stone bridges were blown up or barricaded or had their gate house destroyed blocking the entrance of the bridge, and if there wasn't enough time to remove the planks, wooden bridges would be set on fire.

So... all troops coded with a 'P', which shows up in the unit box as 'Engineer' can repair bridges, and broken bridges are used in the game to indicate where a pontoon bridge could be built, 'repaired' in game terms.

Overall, a good compromise between game and reality.
