Today's the anniversary of the start of Aspern-Essling! Erzherzog Karl's victory over Napoléon!

Er, lets see .... Napoleon crosses the Danube .... Austrian-Hungarian army deny them the opportunity to break out and the bridge collapses ....

Napoleon was LUCKY to escape that one ....

Every one that has written Napoleonic history acknowledges this as Nappy's first DEFEAT.

Call it what you will .... An Allied army attacking on five fronts actually was able to deny the Emperor a win. And in the strategic sense of the word it was a big loss that cost the French a month and a half of precious time remembering that the Spanish campaign was just picking up with the arrival of Wellington ....

"In the Battle of Aspern-Essling, Napoleon crossed the Danube near Vienna, but the French and their allies were attacked and forced back across the river by the Austrians under Archduke Charles. It was the first time Napoleon had been personally defeated in a major battle, as well as his first defeat in a decade."
