Post subject: Weather in Campaign Waterloo & Highways

It is wonderful that we now have the effects of weather. [:)] It makes perfect sense to have a muddy day slow down and limit the movement of units. I find this is especially appropriate for dirt roads and cross country movements, but why does mud affect movement on paved highways at all? Is this a bug?

Thanks.
Rick

Hi Rick,

The weather feature does not differentiate between types of roads, just like it does not differentiate where you are on the map...so we can't have rain showers effecting one part, and not another, nor smoke...So, your point is taken, but it's not part of the system right now.

However, something to consider is, wouldn't troops move a bit slower if they were soaked? Not as slow as if they were slogging through mud as well, true...but still not at the full pace of a crisp spring day I would think...[:)]

Rich,
Thanks for replying so quickly. Yes, I see your point. [:)]

There is so much to consider about weather, eh?

Thanks.
Rick

Certainly is...same with smoke, as was brought up in the Tiller Con discussions...how should drift be handled...at what rate should smoke rise? Ect....so many variables...we'll see where things go though...not long ago we didn't have the feature at all, so no telling what will be down the pike...[:)]

For blackpowder smoke and weather elements such as isolated pockets of mist in low lying marshy terrain, perhaps there could be some A/I controlled smoke/fog "units" that, if fog, would tend to be fixed and evaporate as the weather warms up, or if smoke, would gradually build up as units fire and then drift about the battlefield until they dispersed - this would depend on wind direction and strength.

These smoke/fog "units" would block visibility into and beyond a hex - just like any normal unit. However, it would also be possible for them to count as a "skirmisher" unit (which doesn't actually block visibility) when the smoke's still building up or dispersing. This would permit a two-fold level of smoke/fog intensity, with "skirmisher" strength smoke being able to build up as troops continued firing and/or combine with another "skirmisher" strength smoke "unit" to create a full strength "unit" that blocked visibility.

These pockets of smoke would add an extra level of realism to the battlefield and would permit cavalry to sometimes approach infantry without being detected.

Try to imagine a "paved highway" in Napoleonic times. They might be gravel, shell, or cobblestone at best. Not quite what we might think of being "paved" by today's standards.

Indeed. Actually the widespread construction of all-weather roads in anything resembling the modern sense of the word didn't really start before 1815 (mostly as a result of a the negative experiences with "roads" in the Napoleonic wars).

Think of a "pike" in the games as anything that you would recognize as a road even when nobody is actually travelling on it.
