Post subject:  Napoleonic Era DVD's etc...??

I've recently purchased and am in the middle of viewing, Napoleon The A & E Series and find it to be very interesting, but not military based enough for me to be glued to it. I was curious if there any titles out there that are solely or mainly based on the military aspect of the Napoleonic Campaigns ? & If so, are these titles readily available?

Regards, Gentlemen!!

Waterloo - made in 1970 with Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington - excellent battle scenes

also the Campaign of Napoleon ( covers most of the major battles -put out by Kultur ) they have their own web site or you can get them on Amazon as well

The Sharpe's Rifles based on a series of books by Bernard Cornwell. Primarily small unit actions but more of what you are likely looking for. Many, if not all, are available on You Tube.

The original Russian version of War and Peace whilst a bit grainy has the most amazing recreated battle scenes from the Napoleonic wars. In particular the very dramatic battle of Borodino is reproduced on an epic scale.

The attack of the fleches is represented well. Its all a little disjointed and grainy though. I recently found it in my library on DVD and watched it again (last time I watched it was on vhs)

I just wish Peter Jackson would take the technology used for the battle outside Minas Tirith in lord of the rings and do a 5 part movie called the 'Campaigns of Napoleon' based on Chandlers book also referred to in 2001 space oddysey I recall

I will have to contact him as a consultant if he ever did  I know at least 250 people here would support such an enterprise

Perhaps a movie of 'the seven men of gascony' is more likely one day

Salute!

Ah, The Seven Men of Gascony was a favorite of mine when discovered as a youth in my local library as well.

The Sharpe's Rifles TV show was pretty cool too. Featuring Boromir as I recall (speaking of Jackson/LotR, et al).

I did enjoy the AMC series that Gary mentions, a very good cast of actors (Malkovich, Depardieu, Renee Russo... if memory serves) that is focused on the political drama and not the military action.

One of my favourite Napleonic films is "The Duellists" with Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. Made in 1977 and directed by the old "Blade Runner" Ridley Scott.

Salute!

Yes Greg!

The Duellists is a fantastic film.
Perhaps one of the best for a view of the Napoleonic era.

If anyone hasn't seen it - you very much should!

Sorry to be late with this post, but I think you would also enjoy A&E's Horatio Hornblower series. In fact, 1951 Gregory Peck movie of the same name is worth a look, as is 2003's Master and Commander with Russell Crowe.

And then there is Scaramouche, 1952, with Stewart Granger, Janet Leigh, Richard Anderson, Mel Ferrer, et al. Pre-revolutionary France but a good swashbuckler.
