Major victory in game #Z402 (NIR #14 - Never too late; 6 turns). He reports:
The young Podporuchik stood among the men of his company, in front of the hamlet of Utitza. On the field before him laid numerous dead and wounded. The Podporuchik was aghast. Never before could he have imagined that war was such a slaughter. It had all begun the night before. The company had been ordered to take position just next to a small collection of houses which someone had called a village, named Utitza. There they had camped for the night, without any campfires to conceal their position from scouting enemies which were believed to be nearby. The men had been calm and resting, quite in contrast with the Podporuchik, who didn't have the experience of these hardened veteran grenadiers. He had hardly had any sleep at all.
In the morning they had formed up at first light and after a quick mass by the regimental chaplain and a stiff drink of vodka they had begun the waiting. But they did not have to wait for long. After only half an hour they had seen movement in the orchard next to the village. It was unmistakenly some Polish skirmishers. To the left, the Russian battery opened fire. But this didn't stop the invader. Quite the opposite. Out from the orchard came several enemy battalions, charging straight at the battery. "What valor", thought the Podporuchik. Even the tough grenadiers next to him made some remarks about the courage of the charging men. The battery was loaded with grapeshot and swathes of Poles went down but this didn't stop the onslaught. Soon, the battery was overrun, but the ground in front of the cannons were littered with dead and dying. And the Poles kept on coming. Like a wave they surged forward, straight at the Russian positions. But the Russian line stood firm. With calm and coolness the grenadiers held up a steady rate of musket fire. After a little while, the grenadiers began to maneouver around the oncoming Poles. Faced with enfilading fire and hopelessly disordered the Polish battalions began to waver. At this crucial stage the Russian officers ordered the grenadiers to fix bayonets and charge. This was too much for the enemy. From the position on the Utitza hill the Podporuchik saw how the Poles turned around and retreated. "Bloody fools", muttered a grenadier next to him. "But surely, that was brave enough", asked the podporuchik with an innocent expression on his face. "Brave indeed", replied the veteran. "But bravery alone don't win battles for you. Remember what you saw here today, Podporuchik. Then you might not spend the lives of your men in vain." The Podporuchik looked out on the bloodsoaked battlefield and thought to himself; "I hope not. I sure hope not..."

The First Russian Korpus Tournament is raging on the Russian steppes. The battles between the members of the teams have been going on for some time and the first results have been arriving to Army HQ. With still 8 games (out of 21) to be finished, the situation is undecided. The 7 Korpus team is ahead, but the 8 Korpus and the Kav. Korpus have more games still ongoing, so they might catch up.
