Here are my thoughts. I completely agree with you about the non-ideality of this solution. Nor would I have any issue with recording the replay. Putting on my programmer's hat, the main reason to paint a unit on the screen is to be able to (theoretically) shoot at it. Throwing off my programmer's hat and becoming human again, I can also gain intelligence from units I can theoretically shoot at but are beyond the range of any weapon at the moment. Indeed, this is an intended result. But being able to target something and intelligence are two different things. So, gaining intelligence from units I briefly see as they tramp, tramp, tramp along is perfectly legitimate even though at the 20 minute mark they are not visible. What would be cool is some sort of trail they could leave behind, as countless video games do these days.
