This question needs to be broken down into different circumstances.

If Lee at Gettysburg is captured, how does the system decide who will replace him (three corps commanders but no seniority listed that I know of)? Will that corps commander now show an "A" in lieu of a "C"?

Does the replacement have to already be present on the map?

If a brigade commander is killed and that brigade has two 'spare' officers, how does the system choose which spare officer will take over the brigade? Does the system now show a "B" on the spare officer that designates him/her (you never know) as the new brigade commander? If none of this occurs at the brigade level, then I assume that the brigade remains leaderless and can never get a morale check boost from the immediate commander?

Gen. Simms,

This has never been explained so I ran a quick test in Gettysburg.
This wasn't an exhaustive test just ran each test a couple times but here is what I found.
I had Lee and Meade in hexes by themselves with an enemy unit next to them.

First I had Longstreet, Hill, Ewell and Stuart in the same hex and the same with the yankee corps co's.
In both case with the capture of the Army CO the Corps CO with the best Command Rating was promoted to Army CO.

So I spread them out with the best Command Rating the furthest away and found the closest officer with the best rating was promoted.

So I put both Hancock and Reynolds in the same hex and whichever one was on top of the stack was promoted.

Last test was I removed Longstreet, Reynolds and Hancock and ran one final test.
The closest officer with the best rating was promoted, strangely Stuart was made Army CO over Hill and Ewell even though he is a Division CO and a MG.
I'm guessing that is because his division is directly under Lee.
There are several C Rated yankees and the closest one was promoted.

I would say Army CO promotion is based on
1. Best Command Rating on the field at the time.
2. If more than 1 are the same rating the closest officer to the Army CO when he is removed.
3. If in the same hex officer closest to top of stack.

Not sure if the same thing applies to Corps and Division CO's but I would guess it probably does.
