Why am I here? That's an interesting question. I'm sure it doesn't have an easy answer, and I don't really care to bore all of you to death.
Yet, when I joined this club, this was by far my least favorite period of my three "major" club historically. I'll be honest, while I've done a great deal of reading on the War of 1812 since then (and am fascinated), the ARW still holds little real interest for me. I'd rather read about Marengo or Chickamauga than any ARW battle.
That said, I've felt most committed and connected to this particular club from the day I joined... even more so than the NWC, for all my lofty rank and status there. Why is that? It's the people and the connections that have been built here. Sure, I enjoy a good brawl up on top of Breed's Hill (only Natty and Cerebus have been able to throw me off that hill), or a wild battle of manuever at Germantown_a (which I've yet to win). However, ultimately, what has made this club is the connections. I've made friends here... more here than in any other club. I've had fun tweaking the Lobsterbacks (still working on good insults for the loincloth set, or the froggies), and had a great deal of fun trading barbs back and forth.
Is my fun invalid, that I more remember Sgt. Maj. Smythe Smythe and his mutton chops than my particular record on the field of Brandywine (which isn't all that good anyway)?
I don't mind people looking at numbers, though I don't like having the fact that ultimately a poor player trotted out for all to see on this board. I do think though that we need to remember that numbers are but a tool and a toy. The CCC is a community, and that is something that has always set it apart.
Does Dierk keep playing me just because I'm an easy mark? No, it's because it's something both of us want to do.
That's my $.02.
