I'm getting disillusioned with the Colonial War system. I'm playing a scenario of the "Battle of Germantown" with a good opponent so I don't want to reflect on his play, which is very good. But I'm observing some things that just don't make any sense to me and defy what I have read on the period. I am the British player.
I'm just going to describe a typical turn where the armies are fairly linear and about seven or eight hexes apart. At one part of the battlefield the British closed to point blank, (adjacent) range and fired with all units in line. Yes, I realize that fatigue, unit quality, arms all make a difference but, some observations.
1.) On that turn the Colonials inflicted 37 men in fire casualties
2.) The British inflicted 39 casualties, even though they had closed to point blank range and fired at many of the Colonials while they were still in column.
The Colonials can hit at up to "7" hexes away and still kill '1' man on average while the British had closed to the best range possible and still only get about the same. Plus a lot of fatigues and no result. Big deal about the 'fatigues' I would take the casualties any day.
3.) In the melee phase where the British should dominate, I hit some of the Colonial units that I KNOW were "E" class companies with 3 times the men and get results of "1" man hit. Holy Cow! "1" man hit in a bayonet charge by three British companies!!!?????
4.) Crack, elite British regiments like the Black Watch can't even cross an open field without disrupting while an entire Colonial line in open order can move 6 hexes and not a single unit will disrupt.
5.) As for the Colonial Dragoons, well, I won't even go there.
I just can't understand this. The "help" files don't tell me much except maybe that Muskets should be better than rifles at point blank range.
Can someone explain this to me and try to win back my confidence in the system because right now I don't think too much of it. Or is it that "Germantown" is a flawed scenario. Something seems wrong with the whole American army firing "rifles" at range 7 and getting hits. If the whole army is rifle armed isn't that rather a serious error? What is the point of having elite units like 'Morgan's Rifles' if the rest of the army is the same. Or maybe this isn't the explanation at all.
Any comments appreciated.
