I've been recently doing some family history research and that has led to looking into some of the Revolutionary War lineage societies for one of my grandson's (eligible via my daughter-in-law's family).

I took a class about how to research military records and came across an example of a "patriot" who would make his ancestors eligible to join one of the societies in what struck me as an odd connection.

His army record shows that some one else served his tour for him - it does not say why - assumption is they were paid. Turns out by getting someone to serve in the military for him, he was demonstrating a commitment to the revolution, and therefore would be a valid Revolutionary War Ancestor as far as the lineage societies.

I assume the ancestors of the person who actually served would also be eligible, so that "spot on the roster" is essentially a "two-for".

For those of you with Colonial, 1812 or Civil War ancestor, one thing you want to see about getting is a copy of the pension application file in Washington. In most cases the application (of either the soldier or the widow) contains a rather detail narrative history of the the person's entire service -- I'm told applications are typically around 10-100 pages of material describing the prson service.
