I need to know if anyone know how they said back then in the 18th century when they were going to take a trip with a horse and carriage. Did they just say that I am going to go by horse and carriage or did they just say they were going to drive up there, since there wasn't really any other choice for "driving".

Examples:

I am going to take a horse and carriage to New York (?)

I am going to drive to New York (?)
