Dutifully acting as the Earl of Yorktown, I earlier took on four games of Barry Maunsell's 1776 scenario, "The attack on Yorktown" against Phil Prete, Al Amos, Mike Cox and Dave McGown. The results are as follows:

In the first defense of Yorktown, a lighting fast and viscious American/French assault by Major Prete was barely beaten back along miles of embankments. Many brave men on both sides fell in this encounter. Despite severe and constant pressure, Yorktown's defenders held their ground and secured a major victory.

General Amos led a vigorous assault on the city's eastern defenses. Several times the Americans and French breached the defenses, and held one entrance gate at battle's end. Allied German regiments performed exceptionally well. This defense also ended in a major victory, but given another 15 minutes of battle and the outcome could have been different.

The third defense of Yorktown ended in an American/French capture of
the city by General Cox. British regulars, loyal Provincials and allied Hessians fought at the embankments and redoubts with remarkable bravery for an hour and a half, but were swamped by assaulting troops of equal bravery. Brutal house to house and pub to pub street fighting ensued. Expertly led by General Cox, the easternmost town square was overrun at 10:30 and the city was surrendered in a major defeat to the enemy at 10:40. At 10:45 I vowed to Lord Cornwallis to retake Yorktown!

In the fourth defence of Yorktown against Commandant McGown, the city was retaken just hours after the Cox American/French takeover. The Commandant's men courageously pressed against the embankments and pierced them at several points. British regulars and Provincials doggedly gave ground, inflicting a heavy toll, but French/Americans both managed to occupy the western town square briefly. Only a fierce hand-to-hand counter attack by the Hessian Anspach regiment reclaimed it. Guard regiments were especially tenacious in their stand. The battle ended with some sectors of the city in enemy control, but the attackers were so weakened that a major British victory was achieved, and again the outcome could have been different given another 15 minutes time.

My thanks and salutes to all four officers and gentlemen! All were great opponents and I enjoyed each game, even the drubbing I took at General Cox's hands. [:p]
